Hiroshima calls for help with inscription of A-Bomb Victims’ Memorial Register
Hiroshima is seeking public help to inscribe new names into the Atomic Bomb Victims’ Memorial Register for the first time.
As of August 2025, 349,246 names are currently included in the 130 volumes that make up the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Victims Registry (one volume is blank to represent all the unknown victims of the bombing).
The memorial register, which is housed in a stone chamber beneath the Cenotaph in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, is updated annually to include the names of holders of an Atomic Bomb Survivor’s Handbook who have passed away in the previous year.
New names are written in the registry by hand, a task that has hitherto been performed by fellow survivors. However, given the aging of survivors, this year the local government plans to recruit additional members of the public to assist with this solemn task.
The city aims to recruit around 10 people of high-school age and older, who either live in Hiroshima City or commute to work or school in the city. Applications are open until February 27th, with a screening that includes a penmanship test and interview concerning thoughts about The Memorial Service for the Atomic Bomb Victims and peace issue in general is to be helfd on March 15. Details can be found in Japanese on the Hiroshima City website here.
