Fare-dodger gets 6 years in prison for assaulting Astram Line employee
A 30-year old fare-dodger was sentenced to 6 years in prison by Hiroshima District Court on October 1 for assaulting an Astram Line station employee who confronted him about not paying his 240 yen fare.
The incident occurred at Koiki Koenmae Station at around midnight on November 3 last year. When the station employee confronted the man at and tried to stop him fleeing the scene, he was assaulted by the perpetrator, who stomped on his knee, fracturing his right tibial plateau. The injury required a year of treatment.
The presiding judgepointed out that “in order to escape from the station staff, the victim assaulted the victim with enough force to break her tibia, and there are no extenuating circumstances to justify the crime.” He then stated that “the victim has yet to return to work as a station staff member, and the consequences are grave.”
Although the prosecution sought a 7-year sentence, he handed down a six-year prison sentence.
