Hana Wine
A cozy combination of wine shop and bar that offers surprisingly good value for such an up-scale location. They do a great job of stocking unique Old and New World ‘daily drinkers’ for up to about ¥2000.
Hana wine’s owner, Kubota–san is usually on hand to help you choose between an Argentine Torrontés or a German Gewurtztraminer. The temperature-controlled cellar has a nice selection of premium wines, mostly French and Italian, from some of the world’s greatest regions.
Best of all, bottles bought at the store can be consumed at the wine bar for an extra (corkage) fee of only ¥1000. Indeed, it seems like Kubota-san is on something of a mission to give people the chance to sample great wines at reasonable prices in welcoming and unpretentious surroundings.
Hana Wine is a place where anyone, whether a connoisseur or someone who doesn’t know their chablis from their chardonnay, can happily drop in with a friend or on their own.
They also have several bottles available for glass pours as well as some wine-accompanying snacks and Yoko-san’s delicious cake of the day. Regular tasting events, lively nighttime atmosphere and a friendly knowledgeable staff have made this store very popular.
When we went for a drink recently and got 2 lovely glasses of their house wines, one from Australia and another from France, it was a real treat. We also shared a selection of breads and cheeses and our bill came to a very reasonable ¥3,000 for everything. The wine and food was great, but the atmosphere was also comfortable and friendly, there was a real cozy tavern feel to the place.
If you are planning to go by yourself or with a friend, you can likely squeeze in even on a busy weekend eve, but if you want to go with a small group or make sure there is a space, a reservation is recommended.
