Roots Hair Salon

In my many years enjoying the fantastic pampering of hair salons in Hiroshima, I have never been to any other salon so exclusive it could only accommodate one customer at a time to ensure a personalized salon experience. Kazue’s new space is conveniently located next to a parking garage just off Namiki-dori. It is sunny and cheerful and the interesting antique and retro furniture add a touch of class.

Kazue Yanagihara opened her own salon, Roots, in 1999 after hairdressing for 10 years in a variety of salons, including one in London. Being married to a Londoner and having worked as a hair-dresser for the local multi-cultural population for more than a year, gives her ample experience working successfully with foreign hair. She says however, that no matter what other hairstylists might say about foreigner’s hair being difficult, she doesn’t agree. She says, “there is actually a lot of variety in Japanese customer’s hair as well.”

Unlike having my hair worked on in the larger salons where there are many staff bustling around and other customers chatting and the clink and clang of this and that going on, being the only one in Kazue’s salon was a real treat. As I enjoyed total privacy during my visit, I asked her why she chose to run such a small shop.  She said she wanted to create a much more comfortable, relaxing and personalized salon experience than you can get in the big salons that are busy with lots of staff and customers around.

You will enjoy having a cut, perm or color by Kazue’s expert hand while enjoying having the place to yourself. You will also undoubtedly enjoy your Roots experience even if your Japanese is not great, as she also has a flawless, natural English ability paired with a friendly yet easy-going personality.

• If you need to cancel an appointment make sure to do it at least 24hours in advance to make sure there is no penalty fee
