Major restoration work on Miyajima pagoda to begin January 20
One of Miyajima’s iconic buildings will be under scaffolding for most of 2025.
The vermillion five-story pagoda, next to the Senjyokaku Thousand Mat Hall, will receive some TLC in 2025. The pagoda, known for its harmonious blend of Chinese and Japanese style design, was originally built in the 15th century, and provides a photogenic backdrop to many of Miyajima’s most iconic views.
From January 20, scaffolding will go up around the pagoda, and workers will carefully replace the cedar bark that covers the pagoda’s elegant roofs for the first time in a quarter of a century.
The work is planned to continue until December 20, 2025, so that the views will be restored before the busy New Year holidays come around again.
The last major restoration work was conducted back in 2016, and see-through netting was used so that the pagoda wasn’t completely concealed.
However, if you want to enjoy a picture-perfect view of Miyajima before Christmas, we urge you to get out there in the next couple of weeks!
