Ebisu Shrine‘s autumn festival marks the arrival of winter in Hiroshima. Known among locals as Ebessan after the god of commerce, surrounding stores hold sales and buy komazadare bamboo rakes adorned with gold coins and atreasure ship. You might here business owners complain that the whole thing is a racket, but you won’t see a shop, restaurant or bar in the area without one. A large keg with mouth wide open is placed in front of the shrine to receive offerings.
Last year (2014) the main Chuo-dori road is closed to traffic from 7:35pm on Thursday November 20 and addition to all the stalls and activity around Ebisu Shrine two stages were set up, one at the Ebisu-dori intersection and another at the Shintenchi intersection where kagura dance and taiko drum performances are held. We are waiting to hear the 2015 schedule.
