Masuda Suigousai Summer Festival

Nishiki-gawa (Kintai-kyo Bridge) Mizu-no-Saiten Fireworks Festival

Annual fireworks display held on the first Saturday of August each year with the dramatic backdrop of the Kintai Bridge in Iwakuni. 6000 blasts over an hour and a half. Tojo Yukasai Fireworks Festival

This summer festival in rural Tojo in Shobara finishes with 1300 fireworks lighting up the surrounding mountains. As well as festival stalls, there are bon dances, music performances and talent shows. The event attracts around 3000 people so it should feel like a nice local affair. Yassa Fireworks Festival

The grand finale to Mihara's three day Yassa Festival is a fireworks display with 5000 bangs spread over 45 minutes. Organizers advertise some spectacular booms and surprising combinations. Yanai Goldfish Lantern Festival

The route from Yanai Station to the Kanaya old quarter, with its many traditional white-walled storehouses, is decorated with over 2000 red and white paper goldfish lanterns are decorated in town. There are giant goldfish lantern floats, lantern dances, and, of course, a big fireworks display to round everything off. Fireworks: 20:45-21:00

Kanmon Kaikyo Fireworks Festival

Huge fireworks display over the channel that separates Honshu from Kyushu. 15,000 fireworks are set off from either side of the channel. Big displays also mean big crowds, and this one attracts a total of around 1.2 million viewers along the coastline! Fukuyama Ashida-gawa River Fireworks Festival

Fukuyama's three day summer festival is rounded off with a 75 minute display featuring 10,000 fireworks over the Ashida-gawa River. This display is one of the bigger ones in the area, attracting over 30,000 people. The event will be postponed until the following day in the event of stormy weather. If the weather doesn't improve the event will be cancelled. Access: Shuttle buses from Fukuyama JR Station (15 minutes ¥190 or ¥240 one way depending on which bus you take)

Setoda Summer Festival

This festival gets going as the sun sets - often stunning from aptly named Sunset Beach. Taiko drumming and band performances, followed by a 3000 blast, 30 minute fireworks display which includes some of the biggest in the region which produce bursts of over 300m in diameter. Miyoshi City Fireworks Festival

This spectacular fireworks display over Shinjiko Lake in Matsue in Shimane Prefercture, silhouettes Yonegashima island against a blaze of color, is part of the annual Suigosai Festival and is usually held in August. This year, it has been rescheduled so as not clash with the Tokyo Olympics. The festival goes all day. Expect quite some congestion if driving.
