Wednesday Night Kagura
November 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
¥1200Check out spectacular Hiroshima Kagura performances in the city center, every Wednesday night until Christmas.
Every Wednesday, one of Hiroshima’s approximately 300 Kagura troupes come into the city center from the countryside to perform a 45-minute play. The plays, based on Japanese myths, legends and historical event vary, but the show are always thrilling. Expect demons, multi-headed serpents, dazzling special effects and lightening fast costume changes. If you are in Hiroshima City on a Wednesday, Wednesday Night Kagura is not to be missed and costing only 1200 yen, it is a real bargain!
In contrast with other forms of classical and folk theater in Japan, Hiroshima Kagura, with its action sequences and driving percussive rhythms, is highly entertaining even without knowledge of Japanese. There is an English-speaking MC on hand to help explain things and two monitors displaying subtitles on each side of the stage. There are also a number of seats with personal monitors displaying subtitles are available (you are not, however, able to reserve these seats in advance – please buy unreserved seating tickets at the door from 6pm on the day of the performance).
Be sure to stick around after the show to get your photo taken with performers and their amazing hand-embroidered costumes.
