The Secrets of Picture Books

July 7 - August 19

Secrets of Picture Books Exhibition

Technical Essence of Original Illustrations for Children’s Books – from the Collection of Miyagi Museum of Art

In 1956, Fukuinkan Shoten introduced “Kodomo no Tomo” (Children’s Companion). Published monthly, each issue had a single story illustrated by a single artist. Examples of illustrations from early editions of Kodomo no Tomo from the collection Miyagi Museum of Art are on display.

From the Hiroshima Museum of Art website:

The collection of the original illustrations from Miyagi Museum of Art consists of works especially from early series of the monthly children’s book “Kodomo no tomo”. These original illustrations were created by the artists in a wide range of fields, including Western-style painting, Japanese-style painting, manga, commercial design, and so on. So the selection of materials and techniques, as well as the use of various unique spaces in the screen, shows senses of freshness. This exhibition explores “secrets” of the expression from the senses in the children’s book, focusing on the traces of the artist’s hands, painting materials and textures.
