Onomichi Saturday Night Market

Onomichi’s Saturday Night Market (doyou-yomise) is as much festival as shopping expedition. On Saturday nights between June 8 and July 20, the town’s usually quiet shotengai retro shopping arcade buzzes with people buying nik-naks and playing traditional festival games.

Best of all, it’s all undercover, making this is a great rainy season option.

It gets particularly colorful in the run up to Tanabata star festival on July 7, when the arcade is festooned with tanabata streamers and decorations.

The Gion Festival coincides with the night market on June 29, so this is a great one to aim for if you can.
