Wednesday Night Kagura

If you are in Hiroshima City on a Wednesday, Wednesday Night Kagura is not to be missed and at only 1,800 yen, it is a real bargain!

Every Wednesday, one of Hiroshima’s approximately 300 Kagura troupes come into the city to perform a 45-minute play. The plays, which are based on Japanese myths, legends, and historical events, may vary, but the shows are always thrilling.

Expect demons, multi-headed serpents, dazzling special effects, and lightning-fast costume changes.

In contrast with other forms of classical and folk theater in Japan, Hiroshima Kagura, with its action sequences and driving percussive rhythms, is highly entertaining even without knowledge of Japanese. There is an English-speaking MC on hand to help explain things and English subtitles are displayed above the stage.
