Tencho-sai Classical Court Dances on Miyajima

¥300Bugaku classical court dances that date from the late 12th century performed at Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima to commemorate the birthday of the current Emperor Naruhito.
The performance starts at 10:00 after shrine ceremonies.

Enbu purification dance
Manzairaku (dance of the left)
The cry of a phoenix shouting “banzai” during the Tang Dynasty is copied into the music, and its appearance choreographed into the dance.
Engiraku (dance of the right)
Created during the reign of the 1oth century Emperor Daigo, the dance is attributed to Imperial Prince Atsumi (893–967), and the music to Fujiwara no Tadafusa. The name of the piece is taken from that of the Engi era (901–23).
Ranryo-oh (dance of the left)
The tale of a Chinese prince who wore a fearsome dragon mask to conceal hid beautiful face.
Nasori (dance of the right)
Imitating a male and female dragon ascending to the heavens, called the twin dragon dance.
Chohgeishi (closing music).
¥300 shrine entrance fee required.
