Setsubun Water Purification Ritual at Toukasan

Enruji Temple (A.K.A. Toukasan) commemorates Setsubun on the last Sunday of January with a cold water purification ceremony.

Temple monks and members of the public don loincloths to take part in a real ice bucket challenge in the temple precinct that is well known as the focus of summer’s Toukasan yukata festival.

Ceremonies are followed by mame-maki throwing out of packs of beans and sweet treats.
