Ihei Kimura – Living in Photography

A retrospective of pioneering Japanese photographer, Ihei Kimura, sometimes described as the “King of the Leica.”

Kimura Ihei (1901–1974) was an early pioneer in recognizing the expressive potential of compact cameras, establishing his reputation through snapshots and portraits that swiftly captured everyday life.

This exhibition revisits the career of Kimura Ihei, who left a significant mark on the history of Japanese photography, through a selection of approximately 165 works, divided into six sections: Dream Island — Okinawa, Portraits and the Theatrical Performances, Scenes from Showa Period Japan, Trip to Europe, Trip to China, and Akita Folklore.
