A Summer Evening of Prayer & Peace

On the night of August 5, the string of temples and shrines in Futaba-no-sato, originally constructed to protect the castle town of Hiroshima from misfortune that was said to come from the inauspicious northeast direction, are illuminated by candles and decorated with flowers to comfort the souls of the victims of the A-bombing and to wish for peace throughout the world. Peace Memorial Ceremony

The Peace Memorial Ceremony is held each year in memory of the victims of the atomic bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima at 8:15am on August 6, 1945. On this occasion, those who lived through the event as well as those who lost loved ones play a special part in the proceedings. Lantern Floating Ceremony

Every year on the evening of August 6 thousands of people make their way to banks of the Motoyasu River that runs below the Atomic Bomb Dome , bordering the Peace Memorial Museum. Here they set colorful paper lanterns bearing personal appeals for peace and to, once more, commemorate those who lost their lives in the bombing, many of whom took their final painful breaths before succumbing to their injuries in this stretch of water. Local DJs and musicians commemorate Aug 6th in their own way at this free outdoor party from dusk until the police shut it down.
