SUMMARY:The Secret of the Finnish Sauna
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition that explores the history and culture of the sauna\, which is deeply rooted in Finnish daily life—from multiple perspectives\, uncovering the secrets of a rich and fulfilling way of living. \n \nThe sauna is said to have originated in Finland more than 2\,000 years ago. Saunas also serve as spaces for communication and social connection. \nAmong the exhibits is a full-scale recreation of the sauna cabin from Alvar Aalto‘s Muuratsalo Experimental House. \nAdmission\nGeneral admission: 1\,100 yen\nUniversity students 800 yen\nHigh school students and seniors (65 and over): 550 yen

SUMMARY:Exhibition: A Reflection on the Sublime
DESCRIPTION:A group show conceived by the artist Kazuna Taguchi with a structural design by the artist Soshiro Matsubara \n \nA Reflection on the Sublime is a group show conceived by the artist Kazuna Taguchi with a structural design by the artist Soshiro Matsubara. It is itself an abstract study conducted within the framework of an exhibition. \nAmong the participating artists is Joanne Kyger\, a poet who developed her own unique style while engaging with a wide circle of people and various groups in contemporary American poetry. As with others associated with the Beats\, Kyger’s works were influenced by mediation and Buddhism\, in particular Zen. Along with a poem titled “Descartes and the Splendor of. A Real Drama of Everyday Life. In Six Parts.”\, which deals with the French philosopher René Descartes’ Discourse on the Method\, Kyger made a video work called Descartes in 1968. The only video and the only story that Kyger ever made\, the work provided the inspiration and framework for this exhibition. \nThe structure of the exhibition primarily sets out to achieve two things. First\, it attempts to reexamine the framework of the group show while at the same time exploring the possibilities of the format. Second\, it strives to create a quiet dynamism amid the distinctive qualities of the space through the unique behavior of the works\, which transcend the barriers of categories like “modern art” and “contemporary art.” The exhibition itself was conceived as an implicit manifesto. \nA Reflection on the Sublime\nMarch 30 – June 9\nGeneral admission: ¥1\,100\nCollege: ¥800\nHigh school: ¥550 \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Moments to Fly Up
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of the works of Ikeda Masuo (1934–1997)\, a Japanese painter\, printmaker\, illustrator\, sculptor\, ceramist\, novelist\, and film director\, as well as works by artists who influenced him. \n \nMasuo Ikeda (1934ー1997) was born in Mukden\, former Manchuria\, and moved back to Nagano with his parents at the end of the war. After graduating from high school\, he moved to Tokyo to become a painter\, and through Ay-O\, he met Ei-Q\, who led the Demokrato Bijutsu Kyokai (artists association)\, and Sadajiro Kubo\, an art critic\, leader of the Souzo Biiku Movement\, and a collector of prints. \nThe Demokrato was active mainly in Tokyo and Osaka\, and the only condition for participation was “not to exhibit in established art circles\, “which attracted many artists who sought freedom in their creations. Ikeda was one of them\, and he learned copperplate engraving from Ei-Q and devoted himself to printmaking under Kubo’s patronage. \nIn 1957\, Japan\, which was recovering its national strength after the war\, held the first international contemporary art exhibition\, the Tokyo International Print Biennale. Ikeda and other artists from the Democrato group were selected to exhibit their works at the exhibition\, and it became a catalyst for their breakthrough\, but Ei-Q decided to dissolve the Democrato group. However\, the young artists were awakened to the possibilities of printmaking and showed vigorous creative activity\, and Ikeda\, in particular\, won the International Grand Prize in printmaking at the Venice Biennale in 1966 and gained international acclaim. \nThis exhibition looks back on Japanese prints and paintings that attracted international attention at the time\, featuring works from the museum’s collection of lkeda’s works from the 1950s to 1966\, a quarter of a century after his death\, as well as works by artists who influenced Ikeda and with whom he was in contact. \nMoments to Fly Up: Ikeda Masuo and the Demokrato Artists\nJanuary 20 – March 17\nGeneral admission: ¥1\,100\nCollege: ¥850\nHigh school: ¥550\nJunior high and younger: free

SUMMARY:Glass Tableware in Still Life
DESCRIPTION:Glass Tableware in Still Life: Yoko Andersson Yamano and 18 Painters \nFrom the HMOCA website: \n“Ms. Yamano\, how about making a book based on your glass works?” \nThis suggestion was the spark of inspiration for the project Glass Tableware in Still Life. \nArtists communicated the types of glassware they wanted to depict to the glass artist Yoko Andersson Yamano\, who blew glass pieces in response. The artists then produced works while looking at the completed glassware. The photographer Masahiro Sambe subsequently visited the artists’ studios to take photographs\, and the designer Yuri Suyama designed the book. Unfolding in Sweden\, Germany\, and Japan\, the project was initiated in the hope that many would view the resulting glass pieces\, paintings\, and photographs\, eventually leading to this exhibition. \nThe project unites the slightly distorted beauty unique to clear glassware created by free blowing\, artists’ intimate paintings\, and charmingly buoyant black-and-white photographs. \nWe hope viewers will open their ears to the voices emerging from these creative works\,\nand enjoy weaving together their individual stories. \nOpening Hours:\nNovember 3\, 2023 – January 8\, 2024\n10:00-17:00 (final admission 16:30)\nClosed December 27\, 2023 – January 1\, 2024 \nAdmission:\nAdults ¥1\,100\nUniversity students ¥800\nHigh school students and seniors (65 and over) ¥550\nFree admission for children under Junior High School age.

SUMMARY:Alfredo Jaar Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of work by Chilean-born artist\, architect\, photographer and filmmaker based in New York City and recipient of the 11th Hiroshima Art Prize. \n \nEstablished in 1989 by the City of Hiroshima\, site of the first atomic bombing in human history\, the Hiroshima Art Prize aims to appeal to a wider world about the “Spirit of Hiroshima\,” which seeks everlasting world peace through contemporary art. The prize is awarded every three years. This year we present an exhibition by Alfredo Jaar\, winner of the 11th Hiroshima Art Prize\, at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. \nAfter studying architecture and filmmaking\, Jaar (born in 1956 in Santiago\, Chile) moved to the U.S. in 1982\, establishing a base in New York. In the early ’80s\, Jaar gained international recognition for his artworks\, which included photographs\, lightboxes\, and public projects. Since that time\, Jaar has consistently adopted a journalistic perspective based on thorough investigations of historical events and tragedies\, and social inequalities around the world. His work is distinguished by large scale\, multisensorial installations which incorporate architecture\, photography\, film and special effects. \nIn 1995\, the artist created a work related to Hiroshima for After Hiroshima: Special Exhibition for the 50th Anniversary of the Hiroshima A-bombing\, which was held at the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2013\, he has also created works based on his research of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent nuclear power plant accident in Fukushima. This exhibition\, Jaar’s first full-fledged museum exhibition ever held in Japan\, functions as a career-spanning survey which includes some of the most important works created by the artist as well as new works that approach Hiroshima as a contemporary issue. \nhttps://alfredojaar.net/ \nAdmission: \nAdults: ¥1\,300 (¥1\,000)\nUniversity students: ¥950 (¥750)\nHigh school students and seniors (65 and over): ¥650 (¥500) \nOpening Hours \n10:00–17:00 (Final admission 30 minutes before closing)\nClosed Mondays (except September 18 and October 9)\, and September 19\, October 10
