Bar Ken’s and Tres Marias

There’s a good chance you might walk into Bar Ken’s and Tres Marias, or as some regulars call it The black hole, with the intention of staying for only an hour or two, but as the majority have discovered… That rarely, if ever, happens.

With no cover charge and a flat ¥500 price on drinks, no matter what you choose, you are in for a good night of worshipping the alcohol gods.

If you are now thinking, “Yes, that is all well and good, but I want to dance or watch girls dance”.

Let me assure you, there is plenty of room to dance and the music changes with the mood. Even if the bar is meant primarily as a Latin-inspired bar, you’ll hear everything from country, pop, Latin, funk and everything in between. The only thing you need to do is to request the music and if you have it on your phone, well let’s just plug it in so you can enjoy a dance to your favorite number, be it in English, Russia, Danish or Japanese.

And for the ladies, here is a little secret about the owner; beside being native Japanese he speaks both English and Spanish fluently and the best part He loves to dance to the Latin tunes and I have personally seen several impromptu dancing sessions in salsa or, my favorite, the faster paced merengue.

A blogger recently posted about this bar, and in this short paragraph she hits the nail on the head in capturing the essence of the bar.

Unassuming, unpretentious, conservative outside. Inside you dance until you’re dizzy, and you talk, laugh, sing, yell, until your voice gives under an avalanche of energy.
Where you’re crushed, oblivious, under the joy of it all and the bartender knows everything- what you know, what you need, what you love-
Where the senses brew together, you surface from the murky dregs, and they somehow make more sense than ever; warmth you can see, cadences you feel, emotions that you taste, that you touch, that you hear
