Boulangerie Hiro

Not far from the Hakushima astram station, adjacent to the Hakushima park and playground, is a European style bakery worth a visit. Boulangerie Hiro opened in the sleepy suburb of Hakushima in 2010 and is a full-service bakery with a loyal customer following. They offer a small variety to choose from but the taste and quality is upper crust.

Bright orange paint and beautiful stained glass windows next to the doors give Hiro’s a distinct look from both the outside and inside. The interior is as classy as you would think, there is no clutter, only a few tables where you can sit and eat-in with a cup of coffee or tea next to the windows.

The style of this bakery is what we experienced in bakeries in France, yet still quite unique for bakeries in Japan, you order what you would like by communicating with the staff waiting to serve you, instead of filling up a tray for yourself. The staff are friendly and even if you cannot read the explanations next to each bread, pointing to them to order would suffice.

The varieties of breads are also something special, when I visited I got a few savory breads made with figs, nuts and a sweet pastery that was crisp and delicious. Biting into them I was transported back to France. I’ll have to go back to check if they also make baguettes.
