WAREZ Peace Shirts 2013

This year’s peace shirt designs by WAREZ are out and the deadline for making sure you get yours is fast approaching. This year there are more colors to choose from, as well as two feminine styles and mini ones for kids.

There’s a good chance you’ll have seen these shirts out in the wild (though they do tend to be rather nocturnal). The simple, but distinctive design is inspired by the cenotaph the in Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park. The man behind the shirts, SKM, has been making them to order since 2008. In the first few years it was just a tightly knit group of close friends that were buying the shirts, but in recent years, more and more people have been ordering for themselves, friends in other parts of Japan and as souvenirs and gifts for people overseas.

On a recent trip to Tokyo, a couple of people asked me what the design was all about and where they could get hold of a shirt. It proved a really effective way of engaging people on the subject of Hiroshima, as well as making new friends.

This year’s shirts come in 5 different color schemes for men, women get two styles to choose from in several colors and kids’ sizes make their debut this year. In addition to the standard line up are two specially commissioned designs by RIDDIM TAXI and Elephant kids wear (See gallery below).

Payment and receipt of merchandise is likely to involve meeting at a mutually convenient time and place in Hiroshima city, or at the Summer of Love outdoor peace party on the night of August 6.
