SUMMARY:Sumiyoshi-san Summer Festival
DESCRIPTION:Sumiyoshi-san\, along with the Tokasan and Ebessan festivals\, is one of Hiroshima city’s big three annual shrine festivals that have long histories. \n\nSumiyoshi Shrines are dedicated to water gods\, and Sumiyoshi Shrine is located right next to the river in Sumiyoshi-cho on Route 2. It’s a real local festival\, and the neighborhood streets are lined with the usual festival food and game stalls. Many people visit the shrine over the course of two days to pray for good health and fortune. There are several nautical rituals involving traditional\, oar-powered boats that make the journey all the way to the A-bomb Dome and back\, and the floating of small boats on the river. As well as kids’ kagura shows\, each night finishes with a short fireworks display. \nAt the heart of the festival is the Nagoshi no Ōharae\, an ancient purification ritual in which visitors pass through a giant ring woven from chigaya grass (roughly 3 metres in diameter)\, circling left\, right\, and left three times to cleanse body and spirit. Paper effigies (hitogata) are also set adrift on the Honkawa River\, carrying away sins and impurities in keeping with centuries-old tradition. \nLook out for special two-day-only goshuincho (festival stamp seals) and the shrine’s popular summer treat\, Hiyashi Ame — a refreshing chilled syrup drink sold as a “drinkable good-luck charm.” Donations to support the festival are welcome from ¥1\,000. \nTimetable\nFestival start 18:00\nFireworks start 20:00

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Kagura
DESCRIPTION:If you are in Hiroshima City on a Wednesday\, Wednesday Night Kagura is not to be missed and at only 1\,800 yen\, it is a real bargain! \n \nEvery Wednesday\, one of Hiroshima’s approximately 300 Kagura troupes come into the city to perform a 45-minute play. The plays\, which are based on Japanese myths\, legends\, and historical events\, may vary\, but the shows are always thrilling. \nExpect demons\, multi-headed serpents\, dazzling special effects\, and lightning-fast costume changes. \nIn contrast with other forms of classical and folk theater in Japan\, Hiroshima Kagura\, with its action sequences and driving percussive rhythms\, is highly entertaining even without knowledge of Japanese. There is an English-speaking MC on hand to help explain things and English subtitles are displayed above the stage. \nFor an even more memorable night\, sign up for to go backstage after the show to talk with the performers\, check out the amazing costumes\, and take souvenir photos. SUMMARY:Miyajima Kangensai Lantern Parade
DESCRIPTION:This is a great way to take part in the Miyajima Kangensai Festival. Participation is free of charge and there is no need to reserve in advance. \nParticipants gather at Nagahama Shrine which has it’s own red torii shrine gate on the water’s edge a 3-minute walk from Miyajima Ferry Port (in the opposite direction to Itsukushima Shrine). Here\, lanterns are handed out with which\, after a fire lighting ceremony\, everyone welcomes the Gozabune festival ship\, pulled by the rowboats\, back from Jigozen Shrine on the mainland. \n \nAfter a ceremony and performance of classical gagaku court music\, the rowboats proceed to pull the Gozabune festival boat back into the bay where they spin it around 3 times before heading towards Itsukushima Shrine for the climax of the Kangensai Festival. \nThe lantern parade then begins\, heading to Itsukushima Shrine by way of Omotesando shopping street. \n  \nMiyajima Kangensai Lantern Parade Timetable\n\n19:30 Distribution of lanterns at Nagahama Shrine (3 minutes walk from Miyajima Ferry Port)\n20:20 Fire lighting ceremony\n20:40 Arrival of the Gozabune boat at Nagahama Shrine\n21:00 Lantern parade departs for Itsukushima Shrine\n21:25 Lantern parade arrives at Itsukushima Shrine\n\nThe lanterns are collected at Itsukushima Shrine so that they can be used again the following year. \nIf you plan to stay at Itsukushima Shrine to await the arrival of the boats\, please take note of the ferry and train schedules (see below) so that you don’t get stranded! \n  \n \n  \nGetting back from the 2025 Kangensai Festival\nLast Matsudai Ferry Departures (Miyajima to Miyajima-guchi)\n21:00\, 21:30\, 22:00\, 22:30\, 23:00\, 23:30\, 24:00\n(JR pass not valid) \nLast Train Departures\nMiyajima-guchi towards Hiroshima: 23:27\nMiyajima-guchi towards Iwakuni: 24:31 \nLast Hiroden Streetcar Departure: 21:55 to Hiroshima\, 22:30 to Nishi Hiroshima
