SUMMARY:Onomichi Saturday Night Market
DESCRIPTION:Onomichi’s Saturday Night Market (doyou-yomise) is as much festival as shopping expedition. \n \nOn Saturday nights between June 14 and July 26\, the town’s usually quiet shotengai retro shopping arcade buzzes with people buying nik-naks and playing traditional festival games. \nBest of all\, it’s all undercover\, making this is a great rainy season option. \nIt gets particularly colorful in the run up to Tanabata star festival on July 7\, when the arcade is festooned with tanabata streamers and decorations. \nThe Gion Festival coincides with the night market on June 27\, so this is a great one to aim for if you can.

SUMMARY:KESHIKI Beats on Rails Experience Hiroshima with Train Rouge
DESCRIPTION:Hiroshima city tram tour with live DJ spinning club tunes and all-you-can-drink bar service. \n \nKESHIKI Beats on Rails Experience Hiroshima with Train Rouge takes you on an approximately 90-minute ride through Hiroshima City on an out-and-back route to Nishi-Hiroshima Station that starts and finishes at Hiroshima Station. \nThe music ebbs and flows with the changing scenery and the energy of the passengers\, but you generally expect an upbeat housey vibe. A big part of the fun is the interactions you can have through the windows with somewhat bemused commuters waiting for their trams as the red “party tram” passes through the stops along the route. \n \nRecent outing have been fun and well received. Why not give this different view of Hiroshima at night a try>? \n\n \nTickets: 15\,000 yen \nCURRENTLY AVAILABLE ON VIATOR AT 30% DISCOUNT HERE

SUMMARY:Kurahashi Aquathlon
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 event has been cancelled due to damage from extreme rainfall. \nThis annual swim-run event takes place on the southern shore of in lovely Kurahashi Island\, south of Kure. With a short and a long course\, as well as races for kids elementary school age and up\, it’s a good opportunity for the “multisport curious” to dip their toes into events with an open-water swim component. The organizers do insist on participants wearing a swim wetsuit and are pretty strict about enforcing that requirement – this can be a bit frustrating for experienced swimmers – not to mention a little warm if the rainy season has ended and the sun is blasting. \nThe longer swims are out and back in usually calm waters – it can get choppy if the weather is a bit dodgy though – and the kids swim parallel to the shore. The runs are also out and back along the coastal road. \nCamping isn’t permitted on the beach (as far as we are aware) but free floor space is on offer in a local school gymnasium – take your own bedding and breakfast . There is a local festival the night before complete with fireworks\, and adult competitors who show up for the pre-race party which starts after the race briefing on Saturday will be given a ¥1000 food voucher to blow on fried goodies at the festival stalls. Fireworks start a 20:15. \nDistances & entry fees \n\nS Type 3.8km swim 42.36km run ¥18\,000 (¥16\,000 for JTU members) 07:00 start\nA Type 2.4km swim 20km run ¥14\,000 (¥12.000 for JTU members) 09:00 start\nB Type 1.2km swim 8km run ¥10\,000 (¥8\, 000 for JTU members) 10:30 start\nC Type (Junior High School) 0.3km swim 3km run free 11:30 start\nD Type  (Elementary School) 0.1km swim 1km run free 12:00 start\n\nOnline entry: here \nEntry deadline: June 30 \n \n

SUMMARY:Kirikushi Okagensan Festival
DESCRIPTION:The port town of Kirikushi on the north coast of Etajima Island holds a small\, but colorful festival every year around the time of Miyajima’s Kangensai Festival. \n \nThere are stalls and stages\, but the main event is the floating of small boats wrought out of straw which are set afloat on the shallow stream which flows through the town into the port and out to sea\, carrying the wishes of those who made them. It’s a very picturesque scene. \nPostponed until the following day in the event of bad weather. \nSee photos from the 2015 festival here. \nHow to get there\n \n2 minutes walk from Kirikushi Ferry Pier (to and from Hiroshima Port Ujina)

SUMMARY:Sumiyoshi-san Summer Festival
DESCRIPTION:Sumiyoshi-san\, along with the Tokasan and Ebessan festivals\, is one of Hiroshima city’s big three annual shrine festivals that have long histories. \n\nSumiyoshi Shrines are dedicated to water gods\, and Sumiyoshi Shrine is located right next to the river in Sumiyoshi-cho on Route 2. It’s a real local festival\, and the neighborhood streets are lined with the usual festival food and game stalls. Many people visit the shrine over the course of two days to pray for good health and fortune. There are several nautical rituals involving traditional\, oar-powered boats that make the journey all the way to the A-bomb Dome and back\, and the floating of small boats on the river. As well as kids’ kagura shows\, each night finishes with a short fireworks display. \nAt the heart of the festival is the Nagoshi no Ōharae\, an ancient purification ritual in which visitors pass through a giant ring woven from chigaya grass (roughly 3 metres in diameter)\, circling left\, right\, and left three times to cleanse body and spirit. Paper effigies (hitogata) are also set adrift on the Honkawa River\, carrying away sins and impurities in keeping with centuries-old tradition. \nLook out for special two-day-only goshuincho (festival stamp seals) and the shrine’s popular summer treat\, Hiyashi Ame — a refreshing chilled syrup drink sold as a “drinkable good-luck charm.” Donations to support the festival are welcome from ¥1\,000. \nTimetable\nFestival start 18:00\nFireworks start 20:00

SUMMARY:Wednesday Night Kagura
DESCRIPTION:If you are in Hiroshima City on a Wednesday\, Wednesday Night Kagura is not to be missed and at only 1\,800 yen\, it is a real bargain! \n \nEvery Wednesday\, one of Hiroshima’s approximately 300 Kagura troupes come into the city to perform a 45-minute play. The plays\, which are based on Japanese myths\, legends\, and historical events\, may vary\, but the shows are always thrilling. \nExpect demons\, multi-headed serpents\, dazzling special effects\, and lightning-fast costume changes. \nIn contrast with other forms of classical and folk theater in Japan\, Hiroshima Kagura\, with its action sequences and driving percussive rhythms\, is highly entertaining even without knowledge of Japanese. There is an English-speaking MC on hand to help explain things and English subtitles are displayed above the stage. \nFor an even more memorable night\, sign up for to go backstage after the show to talk with the performers\, check out the amazing costumes\, and take souvenir photos. SUMMARY:Miyajima Kangensai Lantern Parade
DESCRIPTION:This is a great way to take part in the Miyajima Kangensai Festival.
