DESCRIPTION:A 15 minute firework display over the sea is the dramatic finale to a series of elaborate reenactments of the triumphant return of Murakami Suigun “pirates” who ruled the Inland Sea during the Sengoku ‘warring states’ period. The reenactments feature highly detailed costumes\, set pieces and a the parading of huge flaming pillars. All the usual festival stalls are also set up in the park\, making it a great evening of entertainment. SUMMARY:Fire walking ritual at Daishoin Temple

Benjamin Pryer \nThe impressive hi-watari-shiki fire walking ritual takes place at Daishoin Temple on Miyajima twice a year in spring and autumn. \nThe autumn ceremony is held on November 15\, just as the autumn leaves are usually starting to look their best\, every year. \nReadings from the 8000 verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra begin at 11am and extravagant Saito-goma rituals begin around 1pm in the temple forecourt with a purification offering to the alter and the chanting of sutras. This is followed by two Buddhist monks circling the area with swords and then shooting 7 arrows into the air which the worshippers struggle to retrieve. Lastly\, while mountain priests blow conch shells\, the pile of cypress branches is ignited. After the fire burns down and only red coals remain\, the head Buddhist monk\, followed by the mountain monks and worshippers\, walk barefoot across the coals chanting a prayer for good health and fortune. \nMembers of the public are welcome to cross the ashes barefoot.

DESCRIPTION:Every year at the end of the New Year holidays\, a fun event showcasing the skill of our local firefighters is on display for everyone to enjoy. \n \nThe event in Japanese is called dezome-shiki [消防出初式] and includes a parade\, demonstration of Edo-era ladder acrobatics (hashigo-nori)\, fire fighting and helicopter rescue demonstrations\, and an impressive grand finale. \nGreat fun for families with kids\, but anyone is welcome to join – there are no admission charges. \nThe display is held at Ujina Minato Park in front of Hiroshima Port Terminal. \nSchedule of events \n\n10:00-10:15 Parade\n10:15-10:40 Ceremony\, speeches\n10:50-12:00 Traditional fire fighter acrobatics and training exercises display\n\nThe  event will go ahead in light rain\, but will be cancelled if rain turns heavy. \nSee more photos from past dezome-shiki here. \n

DESCRIPTION:The impressive hi-watari-shiki fire walking ritual takes place at Daishoin Temple on Miyajima twice a year in spring and autumn. \nThe spring event is held on April 15\, no matter what day of the week it is. \nReadings from the 8000 verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra begin at 11am and extravagant Saito-goma rituals begin around 1pm in the temple forecourt with a purification offering to the alter and the chanting of sutras. This is followed by two Buddhist monks circling the area with swords and then shooting 7 arrows into the air which the worshippers struggle to retrieve. Lastly\, while mountain priests blow conch shells\, the pile of cypress branches is ignited. After the fire burns down and only red coals remain\, the head Buddhist monk\, followed by the mountain monks and worshippers\, walk barefoot across the coals chanting a prayer for good health and fortune. \nMembers of the public are welcome to cross the ashes barefoot. \nPhoto: Lance Cpl.
