DESCRIPTION:An exhibition to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the birth of Albert Marquet (1875–1947)\, a major figure in twentieth-century French painting.  \n \nMarquet worked alongside Henri Matisse and other artists as part of the Fauvist movement\, and later traveled widely in France and abroad. Throughout his career\, he continued to paint everyday scenes of rivers and waterfronts\, including the Seine and various ports\, with a calm and poetic sensibility.This exhibition marks Marquet’s first solo show in Japan in 35 years.  \nThe exhibition at Hiroshima Museum of Art features approximately 90 works—oil paintings\, pastels\, and drawings—borrowed from leading museums in Japan and France as well as private collections. SUMMARY:Toukasan Yukata Festival
DESCRIPTION:Hiroshima really comes alive over the three nights of Tōkasan – a festival that really does feel “festive”. \n \nJoin the 300\,000 people who will be donning their yukata for the first time this year who take over Chuo-dori and environs to promenade\, play festival games like fish scooping\, buy strange inflatable novelties and stuff their faces with equally strange stuff on sticks. \nAs well as parades and summer bon dancing\, there will be taiko drumming and other performances on stages dotted around the center of town. See below for the schedule of main events. Our favorite spot is Yukata de Bon Dance in Shintenchi Park where people of all ages dance to classic Japanese songs crackling out of the PA on the central tower and street stalls sell festival treats at fantastic prices. \nRead more about and see more photos from Tōkasan here. \nThis year\, Chuo-dori is closed to traffic in the evening every night of the festival! SUMMARY:Mibu-no-Hanadaue Traditional Rice Planting Ritual
DESCRIPTION:Mibu-no-hanadaue is a revived rice planting ritual that dates back to the Middle Ages and is reenacted on the first Sunday of June every year.  \n \nThe event was designated as a UNESCO Intangible Heritage in 2003 and many people now make the trip to Chiyoda in Kita-hiroshima to view it. \nBulls are led through the streets to Mibu Hachiman Shrine where they are dressed with elaborately decorated saddles and colorful necklaces. They are then led to a field\, and after they have ploughed it saotome (rice planting maidens) in kimono and wide-brimmed sugegasa hats plant rice seedlings in time with the music performed by drummers and flautists as they sing. \nParking available at the Chiyoda Michi-no-eki and Town Hall from where shuttle buses run to the rice field. \nParade from Mibu Shotengai Shopping Area to the Planting field \n\n10:50 Kids parade (from Mibu elementary school)\n12:00 Folk dance (from Mibu elementary school)\n12:30 Decorated cattle parade (from Mibu Shrine)\n13:00 Traditional music\n\nRice field ploughing and rice planting starts at about 14:00 \nNote Times approximate based on previous years. \n \nAccess: \nCar\nExit the Chugoku Expressway at Chiyoda IC. SUMMARY:Kurahashi Aquathlon
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 event has been cancelled due to damage from extreme rainfall. \nThis annual swim-run event takes place on the southern shore of in lovely Kurahashi Island\, south of Kure. With a short and a long course\, as well as races for kids elementary school age and up\, it’s a good opportunity for the “multisport curious” to dip their toes into events with an open-water swim component. The organizers do insist on participants wearing a swim wetsuit and are pretty strict about enforcing that requirement – this can be a bit frustrating for experienced swimmers – not to mention a little warm if the rainy season has ended and the sun is blasting. \nThe longer swims are out and back in usually calm waters – it can get choppy if the weather is a bit dodgy though – and the kids swim parallel to the shore. The runs are also out and back along the coastal road. \nCamping isn’t permitted on the beach (as far as we are aware) but free floor space is on offer in a local school gymnasium – take your own bedding and breakfast . There is a local festival the night before complete with fireworks\, and adult competitors who show up for the pre-race party which starts after the race briefing on Saturday will be given a ¥1000 food voucher to blow on fried goodies at the festival stalls.
