SUMMARY:Onomichi Betcha Festival
DESCRIPTION:When\, in 1808\, plague was sweeping through the porttown of Onomichi\, the lord in control at the time ordered local shrines to perform purification rights in an attempt to ward of the disease. The rights were to be performed over 3 days and two nights and\, in addition\, an omokoshi portable shrine was carried through the streets with young men dressed a lion and three demons named beta\, shouki and soba at the head of the procession. \n  \nToday\, a festival based upon this unhappy event is held every year over 3 days\, culminating on November 3 which is always a National Holiday. Young men dressed as the lion and demons run through the city streets to the sound of drums and bells\, chasing children and hitting them on the head or body with bamboo whisks. \nThe children thus “beaten” are then said to be safe from illness or disaster for the coming year. The very young children subjected to this treatment by their well-meaning parents are in general quiteterrified and you’ll see plenty of screaming babies and toddlers. According to the Onomichi Tourism Office website\, those poked by sticks carried by beta and soba will be blessed with children and those that get the whisk treatment (from shouki) will become more intelligent. The betcha festival been designated an Intangible Folklore Cultural Property by Hiroshima prefecture. \nBetcha Matsuri video from Onomichi Tourism Association\n \nYou get a great idea of various aspects of the festival in this compilation of livestreams from 2022. Click through to view the different streams. \n \n  \nFestival Schedule\nDay 1 (November 1) \n\nOmikoshi is carried around the city from 18:00\n\nDay 2 (November 2) \n\nFestival rights performed at Ikkyu Shrine (一宮神社) from 11:00\nLive music and karaoke and performance of betcha taiko drunmming from 17:30\n\nDay 3 (November 3) \nProcession through the city between 08:00 and 18:00 \nThe numbers in () correspond to the numbers on this easy to understand map in Japanese. \n \n\n07:30 Between Hondori Shopping Arcade to Sangenya (1)\n09:20 Between Onomichi AEON and Kurihara Street (2)\n12:00 Shimanami Kouryuukan in front of Onomichi Station (3)\n14:15 Depart Tengu Sushi (4)\n14:50 Kubo & Ozaki (5)\n15:40 Hondori Shopping Arcade (6)\n16:40 Between Nagae Street and Nagae-guchi  (near the ropeway station) (7)\n17:30 Onomichi Motomachi Center (8)\n19:00 Ikkyu Shrine  (一宮神社) (9)\n\n

SUMMARY:Numata Hongo Fireworks Festival
DESCRIPTION:This now colorful summer festival has somewhat dark origins. It has grown out of an event to mourn the large numbers of people lost due to famine and disease during the great famines of the Tempo Era in the first half of the 19th century. \nOver time the event turned into a chance for local farmers and farm workers to let off steam once the hard task of rice planting was complete. \nToday\, the festival features a fireworks display of the same number of blasts as the year (Eg 2018 in 2018)\, the usual festival stalls and entertainment such as drumming\, and attracts around 25\,000 people. \nThe fireworks are between 20:35 and 21:00\, but the festival starts at 16:00. \nAccess: 5 minutes from Hongo JR Station on the Sanyo Line.

SUMMARY:[CANCELED] Shinjo no Hayashida Traditional Rice Planting
DESCRIPTION:Shinjo’s annual rice planting event is less well known than the Mibu-no-hanadaue event held in the neighboring town of Chiyoda at the beginning of June\, but its tradition is just as long. The local Provincial Art PreservationCommittee has been working hard to continue the event since 1928\, only ceasing activity during wartime. Known as hayashida\, the ritual involves the welcoming of the  god of trice fields\, sanbai\, into the ground. Saotome rice planting maidens plant rice in time to music played on drums and flutes. \n\n10:30 Japanese drumming and opening ceremony\n10:45 Nanjou-odori dance performance\n11:10 Kagura performance\n13:00 Shinto ritual\n13:30 Rice planting ritual\n15:00 Mochi-maki\n15:30 Closing\n\n
