SUMMARY:Toukasan Yukata Festival
DESCRIPTION:Hiroshima really comes alive over the three nights of Tōkasan – a festival that really does feel “festive”. \n \nJoin the 300\,000 people who will be donning their yukata for the first time this year who take over the main Chuo-dori street and environs to promenade\, play festival games like fish scooping\, buy strange inflatable novelties and stuff their faces with equally strange stuff on sticks. \nAs well as parades and summer bon dancing\, there will be taiko drumming and other performances on stages dotted around the center of town. See below for the schedule of main events. Our favorite spot is Yukata de Bon Dance in Shintenchi Park where people of all ages dance to classic Japanese songs crackling out of the PA on the central tower and street stalls sell festival treats at fantastic prices. \nSee more info and photos from past Tōkasan festivals here.here. \nThis year\, Chuo-dori is closed to traffic in the evening every night of the festival! That’s right\, on Friday\, Saturday\, and Sunday between 7 pm and 10 pm\, the main street will become what is called a Pedestrian Paradise in Japanese. \nFor people from overseas\, there is a special yukata rental service on offer in Fukuromachi Park.\n・ Friday\, Saturday\, Sunday\n・ 13:00-20:00\n・ 4\,000 yen (plus 4\,000 yen deposit\, refunded upon return)\n・ Women: 40 sets\n・ Men: 4 Medium\, 4 Large\, 4 Extra Large sets \nHere\, you can also have your yukata adjusted by a pro for 500 yen if it gets a bit sloppy from all the dancing!\n・ Friday\, Saturday\, Sunday\n・ 13:00-20:00 \n2026 Yukata de Kinsai\nFriday\, June 5\n・ 16:00-20:00 Traditonal Japanese music stage (Fukuromachi Park)\n・ 16:00-21:00 Suntory Highball Garden (Fukuromachi Park)\n・ 18:30-19:00 Yukata Parade on the Hondori shopping arcade\n・ 19:50 & 20:30 Yukata fashion shows (Chuo-dori St.)\n・ Drumming\, shamisen and other performances (Chuo-dori St.)\n・ 21:10 The final dance on the main street – everyone is welcome to join in.\n・ 19:00-21:00 Yukata de Bon Dance in Shintenchi Park \nSaturday\, June 6\n・ 14:00-20:00 Traditonal Japanese music stage (Fukuromachi Park)\n・ 13:00-17:00 Japanese tea experience (Fukuromachi Park)\n・ 11:00-21:00 Suntory Highball Garden (Fukuromachi Park)\n・ Yukata Dance Battle (Chuo-dori St.)\n・ Drumming\, shamisen\, and other performances (Chuo-dori St.)\n・ 21:10 The final dance on the main street – everyone is welcome to join in.\n・ 19:00-21:00 Yukata de Bon Dance in Shintenchi Park \nSunday\, June 7\n・ 16:00-19:00 Traditonal Japanese music stage (Fukuromachi Park)\n・ 11:00-18:00 Suntory Highball Garden (Fukuromachi Park)\n・ Songs in Yukata live show featuring Japanese classic pop songs (Chuo-dori St.)\n・ Yukata DJ Time (Chuo-dori St.)\n・ 21:10 The final dance on the main street – everyone is welcome to join in.\n・ 19:00-21:00 Yukata de Bon Dance in Shintenchi Park \nYukata de Bon Dance\n19:00-21:30 every night in Shintenchi Park \nThe highlight of Tōkasan\, as far as we are concerned. Old-school vibe\, cheap snacks and drinks\, and bon dancing at 19:30 and 21:30\, which everyone is very welcome to join in with. \nPhotos and video from Shintenchi Park during Tōkasan here. \nAnnual appearances by local singer Minami Issei singing classics such as Hiroshima Paradise and the Carp song.

SUMMARY:Sumiyoshi-san Summer Festival
DESCRIPTION:Sumiyoshi-san\, along with the Tokasan and Ebessan festivals\, is one of Hiroshima city’s big three annual shrine festivals that have long histories. \n\nSumiyoshi Shrines are dedicated to water gods\, and Sumiyoshi Shrine is located right next to the river in Sumiyoshi-cho on Route 2. It’s a real local festival\, and the neighborhood streets are lined with the usual festival food and game stalls. Many people visit the shrine over the course of two days to pray for good health and fortune. There are several nautical rituals involving traditional\, oar-powered boats that make the journey all the way to the A-bomb Dome and back\, and the floating of small boats on the river. As well as kids’ kagura shows\, each night finishes with a short fireworks display. \nAt the heart of the festival is the Nagoshi no Ōharae\, an ancient purification ritual in which visitors pass through a giant ring woven from chigaya grass (roughly 3 metres in diameter)\, circling left\, right\, and left three times to cleanse body and spirit. Paper effigies (hitogata) are also set adrift on the Honkawa River\, carrying away sins and impurities in keeping with centuries-old tradition. \nLook out for special two-day-only goshuincho (festival stamp seals) and the shrine’s popular summer treat\, Hiyashi Ame — a refreshing chilled syrup drink sold as a “drinkable good-luck charm.” Donations to support the festival are welcome from ¥1\,000. \nTimetable\nFestival start 18:00\nFireworks start 20:00

SUMMARY:Lantern Floating Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Hiroshima’s annual Peace Memorial Day concludes with the poignant and beautiful August 6 floating ceremony on the Motoyasu River. \n \nEvery year on the evening of August 6\, thousands of people make their way to the banks of the Motoyasu River that runs below the Atomic Bomb Dome\, along the edge of the Peace Memorial Park. Here\, they set colorful paper lanterns bearing personal appeals for peace and to\, once more\, commemorate those who lost their lives in the bombing\, many of whom took their final painful breaths before succumbing to their injuries in this stretch of water. \nEveryone is welcome\, and encouraged\, to take part. There is a 1000 yen charge to cover costs\, and all you have to do is line up for your paper\, add your message\, and then line up again (this part can take a while) to make your way down to the riverside\, where volunteers will help you wrap the paper around a wooden frame and light the lantern. Then\, you can step down to the water and set it afloat with the 10\,000 or so others. \nYou can buy the paper to wrap around your lantern from early in the morning until 8:30 pm. The lantern floating begins on the bank of the Motoyasu River\, opposite the A-bomb Dome Memorial\, from 6 pm after a 30-minute ceremony. Lanterns can be floated on the river until 9 pm. \nReceiving and creating your lantern wrapper can usually be done quite quickly\, but you should be prepared to wait in a long line to reach the embankment from where you can set it afloat. Understandably\, people on the embankment take some time to reflect and also to take photographs\, but the line does move relatively quickly. We recommend having a fan to keep you cool while waiting\, especially on still nights \nIf you are unable to attend the lantern floating in the evening\, or feel the wait might be too long\, volunteers are happy to float your lantern on your behalf. Just let the staff at the reception desk know. \nA word for those with young children\nDisplays describing the aftermath of the A-bombing\, which include some graphic images\, along the path along which you line up to float your lanterns. \nThe official Hiroshima lantern floating is organized by Chushinren.

SUMMARY:Fire walking ritual at Daishoin Temple
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Lance Cpl. Benjamin Pryer \nThe impressive hi-watari-shiki fire walking ritual takes place at Daishoin Temple on Miyajima twice a year in spring and autumn. \nThe autumn ceremony is held on November 15\, just as the autumn leaves are usually starting to look their best\, every year. \nReadings from the 8000 verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra begin at 11am and extravagant Saito-goma rituals begin around 1pm in the temple forecourt with a purification offering to the alter and the chanting of sutras. This is followed by two Buddhist monks circling the area with swords and then shooting 7 arrows into the air which the worshippers struggle to retrieve. Lastly\, while mountain priests blow conch shells\, the pile of cypress branches is ignited. After the fire burns down and only red coals remain\, the head Buddhist monk\, followed by the mountain monks and worshippers\, walk barefoot across the coals chanting a prayer for good health and fortune. \nMembers of the public are welcome to cross the ashes barefoot.
