SUMMARY:Itsukushima Underwater Fireworks Festival
DESCRIPTION:The spectacular Miyajima Fireowrks Festival that was held every summer for almost 50 years until 2019\, has been revived by a private company. \n \nTaking a look at the official website\, it appears that quite a lot of the usual (and presumably\, best) viewing areas are taken up by paid seating. There is\, however\, sure to be place from which visitors can catch the 30-minute show free of charge. \nThis is a pretty popular time to visit Miyajima already\, so arriving early is recommended to scope out and secure your preferred vantage point to enjoy the colorful explosions in front of Itsukushima Shrine. \nThere will be a little market set up in the space next to the Miyajima ferry terminal featuring\, where you can get into the spirit of things with drinks from Hiroshima Neighborly Brewing\, Hiroshima North Beer\, and Dassai sake. Main sponsor ANKER will also be charging phones here for free. \nFireworks schedule: 18:15-18:45 \nIf you can’t make it\, you can get an idea of what it’s like thanks to a livestream by Hiroshima TV.

SUMMARY:Miyajima Tamatori Festival
DESCRIPTION:A bunch of almost naked men clambering on top of one another in the sea trying to capture a lucky ball on a hot summer day! \n \nThe annual Tamatori (literally ‘treasure ball grab’) Festival is said to be based on a ritual one dates back to hundreds of years. After a ceremony within Itsukushima Shrine a ball is placed on a kind of tray which is suspending from a scaffold built over the water in front of the shrine. Teams of men dressed only in loincloths battle to reach and capture the ball while the tray moves up and down in hope of securing a year of good fortune. \nThis year the festival is to be held in the during the morning\, but the start time depends on the tides\, so it’s best to call the Miyajima Tourist Association (0829) 44-2011 to confirm ahead of time.
