SUMMARY:Fire walking ritual at Daishoin Temple
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Lance Cpl. Benjamin Pryer \nThe impressive hi-watari-shiki fire walking ritual takes place at Daishoin Temple on Miyajima twice a year in spring and autumn. \nThe autumn ceremony is held on November 15\, just as the autumn leaves are usually starting to look their best\, every year. \nReadings from the 8000 verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra begin at 11am and extravagant Saito-goma rituals begin around 1pm in the temple forecourt with a purification offering to the alter and the chanting of sutras. This is followed by two Buddhist monks circling the area with swords and then shooting 7 arrows into the air which the worshippers struggle to retrieve. Lastly\, while mountain priests blow conch shells\, the pile of cypress branches is ignited. After the fire burns down and only red coals remain\, the head Buddhist monk\, followed by the mountain monks and worshippers\, walk barefoot across the coals chanting a prayer for good health and fortune. \nMembers of the public are welcome to cross the ashes barefoot.

SUMMARY:Fire walking ritual at Daishoin Temple
DESCRIPTION:The impressive hi-watari-shiki fire walking ritual takes place at Daishoin Temple on Miyajima twice a year in spring and autumn. \nThe spring event is held on April 15\, no matter what day of the week it is. \nReadings from the 8000 verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra begin at 11am and extravagant Saito-goma rituals begin around 1pm in the temple forecourt with a purification offering to the alter and the chanting of sutras. This is followed by two Buddhist monks circling the area with swords and then shooting 7 arrows into the air which the worshippers struggle to retrieve. Lastly\, while mountain priests blow conch shells\, the pile of cypress branches is ignited. After the fire burns down and only red coals remain\, the head Buddhist monk\, followed by the mountain monks and worshippers\, walk barefoot across the coals chanting a prayer for good health and fortune. \nMembers of the public are welcome to cross the ashes barefoot. \nPhoto: Lance Cpl. DESCRIPTION:By far Hiroshima’s biggest street festival\, Hiroshima Flower Festival is a huge event that takes over the area along Peace Boulevard for 3 days of the annual Golden Week holiday.\n \nHiroshima’s biggest annual event\, drawing in many more people than even the August 6 memorial day\, the annual Flower Festival was inspired by the celebrations that followed the Hiroshima Carp’s first championship in 1975. Crowded\, noisy\, high in kitsch and overtly commercial\, it does\, however\, draw in tens of thousands of people from near and far\, and many of them appear to have a pretty good time. \nIn addition to all the parades\, pop bands\, tarento celebrities\, comedians\, and hundreds of local hula clubs performing\, there are opportunities to watch some local kagura dance troupes. The craft beer and local sake tents\, as well as the international food area\, also get pretty lively. But\, frankly\, there is so much going on\, and the program is almost indecipherable\, so your best bet is to dive in\, wander\, and see what you come across. Or\, find a shady spot and enjoy a drink and something on a stick\, watching the crowds go by. \nUsually\, the city streets are deserted once the stages have closed\, but organizers continue to try to provide appropriate entertainment all day.
