The Izuwa-gawa River fireworks display is the climax to the Mizuho Summer Festival in Ohnan. Be aware that although the festival, which includes stalls, kagura and a team bamboo pole tug-o-war, is in the small community of Izuwa rather than near Mizuho Highland ski area. Fireworks start at 20:30

An hour long fireworks display in which 4000 fireworks explode above the water and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force ships docked in the port of Kure decorated with lights. Access: 15 minutes walk from Kure JR Station.

Akiyoshidai Fireworks Festival

This fireworks and light show in the sky above Akiyoshidai's limestone karst landscape has 18oo blasts and attracts about 60,000 people. A 15 minute firework display over the sea is the dramatic finale to a series of elaborate reenactments of the triumphant return of Murakami Suigun "pirates" who ruled the Inland Sea during the Sengoku 'warring states' period. The reenactments feature highly detailed costumes, set pieces and a the parading of huge flaming pillars. This display is the grand finale of beach "town" Kurahashi's summer festival named for the reconstructed 8th century diplomatic ship that used to carry Japanese envoys to Tang Dynasty China which stands in a maritime museum on the beach. Sumiyoshi-san, along with the Tokasan and Ebessan festivals, is one of Hiroshima city's big three annual shrine festivals that have long histories. Sumiyoshi Shrines are dedicated to water gods and Sumiyoshi Shrine is located right next to the river in Sumiyoshi-cho on Route 2. It's a real local festival and the neighborhood streets are lined with the usual festival food and game stalls.
