SUMMARY:Sumiyoshi-san Summer Festival
DESCRIPTION:Sumiyoshi-san\, along with the Tokasan and Ebessan festivals\, is one of Hiroshima city’s big three annual shrine festivals that have long histories. \n\nSumiyoshi Shrines are dedicated to water gods\, and Sumiyoshi Shrine is located right next to the river in Sumiyoshi-cho on Route 2. It’s a real local festival\, and the neighborhood streets are lined with the usual festival food and game stalls. Many people visit the shrine over the course of two days to pray for good health and fortune. There are several nautical rituals involving traditional\, oar-powered boats that make the journey all the way to the A-bomb Dome and back\, and the floating of small boats on the river. As well as kids’ kagura shows\, each night finishes with a short fireworks display. \nAt the heart of the festival is the Nagoshi no Ōharae\, an ancient purification ritual in which visitors pass through a giant ring woven from chigaya grass (roughly 3 metres in diameter)\, circling left\, right\, and left three times to cleanse body and spirit. Paper effigies (hitogata) are also set adrift on the Honkawa River\, carrying away sins and impurities in keeping with centuries-old tradition. \nLook out for special two-day-only goshuincho (festival stamp seals) and the shrine’s popular summer treat\, Hiyashi Ame — a refreshing chilled syrup drink sold as a “drinkable good-luck charm.” Donations to support the festival are welcome from ¥1\,000. \nTimetable\nFestival start 18:00\nFireworks start 20:00

SUMMARY:Numata Hongo Fireworks Festival
DESCRIPTION:This now colorful summer festival has somewhat dark origins. It has grown out of an event to mourn the large numbers of people lost due to famine and disease during the great famines of the Tempo Era in the first half of the 19th century. \nOver time the event turned into a chance for local farmers and farm workers to let off steam once the hard task of rice planting was complete. \nToday\, the festival features a fireworks display of the same number of blasts as the year (Eg 2018 in 2018)\, the usual festival stalls and entertainment such as drumming\, and attracts around 25\,000 people. \nThe fireworks are between 20:35 and 21:00\, but the festival starts at 16:00. \nAccess: 5 minutes from Hongo JR Station on the Sanyo Line.

SUMMARY:Sorasaya Shrine Summer Festival
DESCRIPTION:Stalls\, fireworks and wishes for health and good luck at Sorasaya Shrine’s summer festival\, held near Hiroshima A-bomb Dome. \n \nPeople gather at the Natsukoshi Matsuri (also called “Mizunagatsu-no-Oharai” or “Great Purification of The Month of Water”) to rids themselves of the the sins and bad energy that may have accumulated over the first six months of the year and to pray for health during the coming hot summer months. \nPurification methods include passing through a Chi-no-wa\, a ring made from cogon grass\, and performing a kind of exorcism using paper cut into the shape of a human figure. \n \nSummer illnesses are fought off by the receiving hot water boiled in a large iron pot\, heated by a pure flame and blessed before being distributed to worshippers. \n\nOn sale are special summer Goshuin stamps and grass ring shaped Omamori lucky charms \n \n \nThere are of course lot of fun festival stalls and nice fireworks display that can be watched from the bank of the Ota River just across the road from the shrine entrance. \n \n  \nFireworks are scheduled to start at 20:15. \nSorasaya Shine\n \nPhotos: Sorasaya Shrine | Sorasaya Shrine IG

SUMMARY:Miyajima Fireworks Festival
DESCRIPTION:Hiroshima’s most well known fireworks festival. 5000 fireworks explode over the sea silhouetting Itsukushima Shrine’s O-torii. \nWorth seeing\, but expect huge crowds (300\,000 people showed up last year) and you should get there early to avoid a fight for the prime viewing spots. \nThere are extra ferries laid on that run every 10-15 minutes until just before midnight. The last Matsudai ferry departure from Miyajima is at 23:00 and the last JR ferry [Fireworks festival schedule in Japanese] departure at 23:45 \nFor those relying on the train\, a good tip for the return trip on the way back to Hiroshima is to take the first train heading in the opposite direction (Iwakuni bound) one stop so you can grab a seat on the next Hiroshima bound train. \nRead a bitter sweet account of a fireworks day trip to Miyajima from back in 2006 here and get some tips on getting (and keeping) a good spot from Gyoza Fox here and a collection of great photos from 2017 here. \nThe display will go ahead in light rain\, but in the event of stormy weather will be postponed until August 31.
