SUMMARY:Toshogu Shrine Autumn Festival and Children's Procession
DESCRIPTION:Two-day festival at Toshogu Shrine which features the carrying of a portable shrine through the streets to commemorate a great samurai and a long held ritual. \n \nThe first day of the festival is focused on the shrine grounds where the main religious shrine rituals\, drum performances\, and cultural exhibitions. \nOn day two\, neighborhood children commemorate the two and a half centuries of relative peace that followed the the victory of Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Sekigahara who is enshrined at Toshogu Shrine in Futaba no Sato. \nFor two centuries\, Toshugu Shrine held a grand procession every 50 years after the death of Ieyasu\, called the Toori-gosairei (Toori Festival). The last event was held in 1815\, and was cancelled three times due to the chaos and wars of the late Edo period. In 2015\, the festival was revived for the first time in 200 years as a procession symbolizing peace. \nInspired by the Toori Festival\, the Toshogu Children’s Peace Mikoshi Procession is held on the day before the shrine’s Autumn Festival. As well as the carrying of a portable shrine\, the procession incorporates elements of the Toori Festival\, including the dance of the Kirinjishi\, a sacred animal that only appears in times of peace. \nToshogu Shrine Autumn Festival Schedule\nSunday\, October 11 \n• 09:00-15:30 – Exhibitions & Market\n The shrine grounds open for Tea Ceremony\, Ikebana (Flower Arrangement) exhibition\, and the local plant and tree fair.\n• 09:30 ~ 15:30 – Lucky Draw festival lottery opens for all visitors.\n• 10:30 – Ikari Taiko Performance (1st Set): Japanese drum performance by the Ikari Taiko Preservation Society.\n• 11:00 – Shuki Reisai (Autumn Grand Festival Service): The main religious harvest ritual is solemnly conducted inside the Haiden (Main Worship Hall).\n• 11:45 – Ikari Taiko Performance (2nd Set): A second traditional drum performance takes place shortly after the main prayer service concludes. \nMonday\, October 12 \n• 11:00-16:00 – Stall and events at Toshogu Shrine (matcha tea making etc) \nChildren’s Portable Shrine Procession \n \n• 13:30 – Pre parade performances at the north exit (upper level) of Hiroshima Station \n• 14:00 – Pre departure Shinto ceremony \n• 14:20 – Parade leaves from the north exit (upper level) of Hiroshima Station and makes its way to Toshogu Shrine\n• 15:00 – Parade arrives at Toshogu Shrine

SUMMARY:Saijo Sake Matsuri
DESCRIPTION:The biggest sake festival in Hiroshima in Saijo\, one of Japan’s “Big Three” sake brewing districts in Japan. \n \nAs well as events around the town and brewery openings\, the Sake Hiroba\, an enclosed space where visitors can sample over 800 different kinds of sake from all around Japan (well\, 8 of them anyway). \nAdmission to the Sake Hiroba is by ticket only (advance purchase is necessary) for designated time slots each day. Limits on the number of sakes you can “sample” have been lifted this year\, so we advise making good use of the “yawaragi-mizu” (water to drink between sake samples to take the edge off) that are supplied. \nAdmission to the Sake Hiroba is by ticket and is limited to one of five 2-hour 15-minute sessions over the two-day Sake Matsuri. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, Oct 12\nSunday\, Oct 13\n\n\n10:00～12:15\n10:00～12:15\n\n\n13:00～15:15　\n13:00～15:15　\n\n\n16:00～18:15\n \n\n\n\nAdvance tickets are ¥3\,900 (incl tax) and are available from 7-11 ticket machines Ticketopia [P-code：657-797]. On the day\, you can buy any remaining tickets at the venue. \nTickets Include \n\n8 sake samples\nSnack tickets\nYawaragi-mizu bottle of water (see above)\nCeramic o-chokko sake cup\nSake brewery list (Japanese)\n\nIf this is all too much hassle\, there should be quite a lot going on in the streets between Saijo Station and the Sake Hiroba. Most of it centers on sake (of course)\, and you can pop into the breweries and sample some of their products\, browse the food stalls\, and watch parades and performances. Although alcohol is very much at the center of this event\, many families do attend. \nAccess: \nSaijo is 40 minutes east of Hiroshima on the JR Sanyo Honsen Line. One-way tickets are ¥580 for adults. It’s worth buying your return ticket upon arrival\, as lines to purchase tickets can be long in the evening. \nRead more about the 2023 Sake Matsuri here.

SUMMARY:Miyajima Tamatori Festival
DESCRIPTION:A bunch of almost naked men clambering on top of one another in the sea trying to capture a lucky ball on a hot summer day! \n \nThe annual Tamatori (literally ‘treasure ball grab’) Festival is said to be based on a ritual one dates back to hundreds of years. After a ceremony within Itsukushima Shrine a ball is placed on a kind of tray which is suspending from a scaffold built over the water in front of the shrine. Teams of men dressed only in loincloths battle to reach and capture the ball while the tray moves up and down in hope of securing a year of good fortune. \nThis year the festival is to be held in the during the morning\, but the start time depends on the tides. The main battle for the balls in 2026 is scheduled to be around 10:30 am\, but you can call Miyajima Tourist Association on (0829) 44-2011 to confirm ahead of time.

SUMMARY:Sumiyoshi-san Summer Festival
DESCRIPTION:Sumiyoshi-san\, along with the Tokasan and Ebessan festivals\, is one of Hiroshima city’s big three annual shrine festivals that have long histories. \n\nSumiyoshi Shrines are dedicated to water gods\, and Sumiyoshi Shrine is located right next to the river in Sumiyoshi-cho on Route 2. It’s a real local festival\, and the neighborhood streets are lined with the usual festival food and game stalls. Many people visit the shrine over the course of two days to pray for good health and fortune. There are several nautical rituals involving traditional\, oar-powered boats that make the journey all the way to the A-bomb Dome and back\, and the floating of small boats on the river. As well as kids’ kagura shows\, each night finishes with a short fireworks display. \nAt the heart of the festival is the Nagoshi no Ōharae\, an ancient purification ritual in which visitors pass through a giant ring woven from chigaya grass (roughly 3 metres in diameter)\, circling left\, right\, and left three times to cleanse body and spirit. Paper effigies (hitogata) are also set adrift on the Honkawa River\, carrying away sins and impurities in keeping with centuries-old tradition. \nLook out for special two-day-only goshuincho (festival stamp seals) and the shrine’s popular summer treat\, Hiyashi Ame — a refreshing chilled syrup drink sold as a “drinkable good-luck charm.” Donations to support the festival are welcome from ¥1\,000. \nTimetable\nFestival start 18:00\nFireworks start 20:00

SUMMARY:Onomichi Saturday Night Market
DESCRIPTION:Onomichi’s Saturday Night Market (doyou-yomise) is as much festival as shopping expedition. \n \nOn Saturday nights between June 14 and July 26\, the town’s usually quiet shotengai retro shopping arcade buzzes with people buying nik-naks and playing traditional festival games. \nBest of all\, it’s all undercover\, making this is a great rainy season option. \nIt gets particularly colorful in the run up to Tanabata star festival on July 7\, when the arcade is festooned with tanabata streamers and decorations. \nThe Gion Festival coincides with the night market on June 27\, so this is a great one to aim for if you can.

SUMMARY:Toukasan Yukata Festival
DESCRIPTION:Hiroshima really comes alive over the three nights of Tōkasan – a festival that really does feel “festive”. \n \nJoin the 300\,000 people who will be donning their yukata for the first time this year who take over the main Chuo-dori street and environs to promenade\, play festival games like fish scooping\, buy strange inflatable novelties and stuff their faces with equally strange stuff on sticks. \nAs well as parades and summer bon dancing\, there will be taiko drumming and other performances on stages dotted around the center of town. SUMMARY:Mihara Daruma Festival (Shinmei-ichi)
DESCRIPTION:During the 3-day Mihara Daruma Festival the streets are taken over by stalls selling lucky daruma dolls and every kind of festival food you can imagine. \n \nThe pride of Mihara is also on display\, the nation’s biggest daruma doll which weighs in at a couple of hundred kilograms. \n \nThings kick off on Friday with a cute parade of kids dressed up in daruma costumes\, but the big day is Sunday. It remains to be seen whether the general election falling on the same day will impact the crowds\, but it probably is still the day with most festive atmosphere. \nOne thing is for sure\, it’s going to be chilly. So wrap up warm! \nRead and see more photos from the Daruma Festival here. \n
