Cross Shimanami Stamp Rally
March 14 - March 15Free
Japanese people love a “Stamp Rally” – events when people go from place to place, putting a special rubber stamp in a book or a card to prove they’ve hit the checkpoint, often with special gifts as an incentive. They are a great way to discover new places and the Shimanami Kaido hosts one of Japan’s longest stamp rallies over 2 days in March.
During the “Shimanami Juusou/Shimanami Traverse”, rather than a book and rubber stamps, participants check in at the various locations on a free smartphone app.
Participants are welcome to walk as well as cycle. There is no charge for entry and you can hit as many or as few checkpoints as you like.
All participants who check in at Onomichi or Imabari at the end of their trip will get a little keepsake, regardless of how many checkpoints they managed to get to
◆ The event will be held March 14 and 15
◆ Checkpoints open 07:00-17:00
Be aware that a lot of people are expected to take part and if you are planning to do the event over 2 days, or are planning to be traveling in Shimanami independently on the weekend of the event, you are advised to book accommodation as early as possible.
Checkpoints and more details are yet to to be added to the app and it is unclear how easy it will be to navigate for non-Japanese readers. The app’s menus are, however, available in English and we are sure participants and staff will be pleased to help.
