The prospect of meeting face to face with people who have experienced an event so traumatizing can be intimidating\, but we urge visitors and residents alike to take this opportunity to hear from survivors who have made a commitment to spreading the word about the threat that nuclear weapons pose to humanity\, however\, painful the memories may be. \nThe aim of these regular meetings is to increase opportunities to talk with survivors in a welcoming and even relaxed atmosphere. \nThe significance of the 6th\, is that the A-bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on the 6th of August. The survivors who take part in the gatherings held on the 6th speak in English\, while on the other days there is usually someone on hand to help interpret. \nParticipation fee: No charge\, but please buy at least one drink or food item. \n*This event is held even if the date falls on one of Social Book Cafe’s regular days off. In its place\, however\, this year there will be an outdoor scavenger hunt on Saturday\, October 31. \n\nOpen to all children from infants through elementary school – if they are with a responsible adult who can take photos.\nThe scavenger hunt will start at the usual meeting spot near Hiroshima Castle.\nIt will run from 4PM until 7PM. All locations are outdoors\, in public spaces.\n\n\nEach group must have responsible adults with them.\nYou can choose your own group. Your group can be very small – just your family\, or a bit bigger – a group of friends. This is your choice on how to keep distant and what you are comfortable with. \nEvery group will be given tasks to complete (usually photographs near an object. As an example “Take a picture of your group with a pumpkin.”).\nTasks will be published in easy English.\nAll tasks will be posted on the Hiroshima Kids Halloween Scavenger Hunt 2020 Facebook Page (please join the page before October 31).\nPost your photographs there to show that you completed the tasks.\nYou do not have to complete every single task – but try to do as many as possible.\nPictures should be taken outdoors – there are no tasks that require you to enter any private spaces\, including shops or restaurants. If you want photographs with any people not in your group\, please ask them for permission.\nPlease be polite and friendly towards others.\nCostumes are encouraged\, but not required; however masks are required when the group is together.\nThere will be a prize for every group up to the first seventy five or so children. The annual Tamatori (literally ‘treasure ball grab’) Festival is said to be based on a ritual one dates back to hundreds of years. After a ceremony within Itsukushima Shrine a ball is placed on a kind of tray which is suspending from a scaffold built over the water in front of the shrine. Teams of men dressed only in loincloths battle to reach and capture the ball while the tray moves up and down in hope of securing a year of good fortune. \nThe festival is usually held early in the afternoon\, but the start time varies year to year\, depending on the tides\, so it’s best to call the Miyajima Tourist Association (0829) 44-2011 to confirm ahead of time.
