Shukkeien Garden

Very pleasant reconstruction of a Japanese Garden originally built in the early 1600s. It was designed by reknowned tea master Ueda Soko and seasonal tea ceremonies are hosted in the tea houses within its grounds almost every month of the year.

Illuminated yozakura cherry blossom at Shukkei-en Garden in Hiroshima

The many varieties of cherry blossom in Shukkei-en Garden illuminated after dark. The garden is open until 9:00pm and admission is until 30 minutes before closing. In 2016 the cherry blossoms are illuminated from March 24 to April 3. See more photos from this beautiful event here.

Tea harvesting and tea ceremony

Watch young women pick the leave from the tea bushes in Shukkei-en Garden. Enjoy or cup of tea prepared with the freshly picked leaves free of charge or pay ¥600 to take part in a more formal tea ceremony in one the garden's tea houses. Tea picking  is at 10am, 11am, 1pm and 2pm.

The end of September is the time for "moon viewing" or kangetsu in Japan. A moon viewing tea ceremony is held in Shukkei-en Garden annually at this time. ¥800 for the (more formal) tea ceremony in a tea house (honseki) ¥600 to take tea in the gardens (nodate) The garden admission fee is also required (adults ¥260) or combine your visit with a visit to the adjacent Hiroshima Prefectural Art Museum for a discounted entry.
