Southern Cross

Kiwi-Aussie themed bar Southern Cross is one of the few smoke-free bars in Hiroshima, and it’s pretty big too.

Serving up beer and wines from New Zealand and Australia as well as pub food including such as sausage rolls, meat pies, steak sandwiches, lamb burgers and more.

Southern Cross hosts regular live music events, DJ and theme parties, quiz nights and BBQs. Pecha Kucha Hiroshima has also found a home here. It’s also probably your best bet if you want to see Australian or Kiwi sports on a big screen.

There is a long counter bar and a load of tables with bar stools, as well as small lounge area with sofas in the back stocked with board games. They have WiFi internet connection customers can use too.

It really is a relief to be able to go out for a few drinks, or to a party and come home without your clothes and hair stinking of cigarette smoke. Smokers also seem pretty content with the option of feeding their tobacco addiction out on the balcony, which also provides a fascinating view into the kitchen of the restaurant opposite.

A boys club with mediocre service and prices. Don’t expect the barbacks to chat with you unless you’re a bloke talking rugby, and even then you’ll probably get snubbed.

I wonder if Sophie actually went into the place. The Southern Cross is a great place filled with diverse people/events…Poker/Short Story Contests/Quiz Nights/Live Music…etc. The barkeep is a hell of a guy, interested in talking about anything with anybody.

Quite the Oasis for a lonely Ex-Pat.
