Banks Show Carp Love in Battle of the Banners

After the Hiroshima Toyo Carp secured their first Central League pennant in 16 years, Hiroshima Bank took it to the Unlimited Graphic Design opportunities and celebrated the victory with an impressive banner draped in front of their main branch on Rijo-dori.

The banner featured photographs of the Carp players in various action poses, with omedetou!! “Congratulations!” writ large above their heads.

This week, timed to coincide with the beginning of the Climax Series against Yokohama Baystars in which the Carp hope to secure a berth in the Japan Series finals, Momiji Bank, which is also based in Hiroshima, came up with an imaginative idea to show their love for the team, garner some media exposure and, possibly, to steal a little of their crosstown rival’s thunder. Employees affixed 136 specially printed sheets to the inside of the windows on the 2nd to 5th floors to create a giant 15m x 17m image of the Carp’s much-loved mascot, the Carp-boya, looking out onto the main “Densha-dori” street.

You can view a timelapse video of the employees at work on the Asahi Shimbun site here and screenshots from a local TV broadcast on this Japanese blogpost show the process in more detail.
