Cinematographic and Audio-Visual Library

Treasure trove for the lover of Japanese cinema (with a good command of the language).
The centrally located municipal Cinematographic and Audio-Visual Library has a collection of over 600 films, CDs and vinyl records including many of the great works of Japanese cinema as well as materials directly related to Hiroshima and the peace movement.

The library hosts many 35mm film screenings, usually in collections covering a certain theme. Admission is ¥500 for adults and ¥250 for children; much lower than the cost of going to a big screen cinema. You can also view videos etc from the collection for ¥100 for 90min.

It is a real shame that few (if any of the films are subtitled in English), but it is still a great resource for Japanese cinema buffs.

The library does host screening of international films (though they generally seem to be in languages other than English) subtitled in Japanese. Keep an eye on our events listings for details.
