Peace Museum drops to 2nd place in Trip Advisor Rankings

trip advisor 2014Online travel site Trip Advisor has released its annual list of the 30 highest rated Japanese tourist destinations as voted by overseas visitors. Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Museum, which was ranked top in 2012 and 2013, slipped into second place behind Fushimi-inari Shrine in Kyoto.

Looking at the Trip Advisor today, the Peace Museum currently has 1,111 votes – 863 of which are “excellent” and 205 “very good” (36 people rated the museum as “average” but less than 10 went as far as giving it a negative rating). On the other hand, 1,591 users gave Fushimi-inari Shrine,  with its undeniably beautiful tunnel of vermillion torii gates, an “excellent” and 602 a “very good”.

Local tourist officials have made much of the museum taking the top spot the past two years, so they will no doubt be somewhat disappointed at the result. That said, for a museum to be ranked so highly among the many great destinations that compete for visitors’ attention in Japan is not to be sniffed at. Nagasaki’s Atomic Bomb Museum also rose in the rankings from 21st last year to 18th.

It wasn’t all “bad” news for Hiroshima, however. Its other big attraction, Miyajima, moved up one place into 3rd, kicking the Nara’s Toudai-ji Temple’s Daibutsu into 4th.
