A Summer Evening of Prayer & Peace

On the night of August 5, the string of temples and shrines in Futaba-no-sato, originally constructed to protect the castle town of Hiroshima from misfortune that was said to come from the inauspicious northeast direction, are illuminated by candles and decorated with flowers to comfort the souls of the victims of the A-bombing and to wish for peace throughout the world. There are several cultural events scheduled at some of the temples and the event coincides with a local summer…

Setoda Summer Festival

This festival gets going as the sun sets - often stunning from aptly named Sunset Beach. Taiko drumming and band performances, followed by a 3000 blast, 30 minute fireworks display which includes some of the biggest in the region which produce bursts of over 300m in diameter. Innoshima Suigun Fire Festival

A 15 minute firework display over the sea is the dramatic finale to a series of elaborate reenactments of the triumphant return of Murakami Suigun "pirates" who ruled the Inland Sea during the Sengoku warring states period. The reneactments feature highly detailed costumes, set pieces and a the parading of huge flaming pillars. All the usual festival stalls are also set up in the park, making it a great evening of entertainment. Things start in the late afternoon.
