Radiation Effects Research Foundation Open House
August 6 @ 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
The Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) based on top of Hijiyama took over from the somewhat controversial Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) in 1975. Every year they open the facility to the public for two days in August so people can get a look at what they do and to try to inspire children to get involved in the sciences.
The Radiation Effects Research Foundation will be holding their annual Open House event on August 5th & 6th this year. Members of the public can come see what this local research organization does, including many interactive exhibits geared toward both children and adults showing how radiation works, what DNA and cells look like under a microscope, and playing with liquid nitrogen! It’s a great intro to science and research for kids, and also presents a detailed (but accessible) explanation of RERF’s work studying the effects of radiation exposure among Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors for the past 70 years. Most exhibits are in Japanese, but there are many English speaking staff available to provide explanations.
