Nanzan Shimizu: Hiroshima’s The Master of Modern Metalwork

Shimizu Nanzan was born in Mihara in Hiroshima prefecture and entered the Tokyo School of Fine Arts the year after its establishment. He became a teacher in Kagawa after finishing the post-graduate department in metal carving. In 1915, at the age of 40, he resigned and embarked on the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage. He served as professor of metal carving at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts from 1919 until 1945. He was appointed a Teishitsu gigei-in or Imperial Court Artist in 1934.
