It is itself an abstract study conducted within the framework of an exhibition. \nAmong the participating artists is Joanne Kyger\, a poet who developed her own unique style while engaging with a wide circle of people and various groups in contemporary American poetry. As with others associated with the Beats\, Kyger’s works were influenced by mediation and Buddhism\, in particular Zen. Along with a poem titled “Descartes and the Splendor of. A Real Drama of Everyday Life. In Six Parts.”\, which deals with the French philosopher René Descartes’ Discourse on the Method\, Kyger made a video work called Descartes in 1968. The only video and the only story that Kyger ever made\, the work provided the inspiration and framework for this exhibition. \nThe structure of the exhibition primarily sets out to achieve two things. First\, it attempts to reexamine the framework of the group show while at the same time exploring the possibilities of the format. Second\, it strives to create a quiet dynamism amid the distinctive qualities of the space through the unique behavior of the works\, which transcend the barriers of categories like “modern art” and “contemporary art.” The exhibition itself was conceived as an implicit manifesto. \nA Reflection on the Sublime\nMarch 30 – June 9\nGeneral admission: ¥1\,100\nCollege: ¥800\nHigh school: ¥550 \n URL:https://gethiroshima.com/event/exhibition-a-reflection-on-the-sublime/ LOCATION:HMOCA\, 1-1 Hijiyama-koen\, Minami-ku\, Hiroshima-shi\, Hiroshima-ken\, 732-0815\, Japan CATEGORIES:Art ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://gethiroshima.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/A-Reflection-on-the-Sublime.jpeg GEO:34.3845227;132.4731389 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=HMOCA 1-1 Hijiyama-koen Minami-ku Hiroshima-shi Hiroshima-ken 732-0815 Japan;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=1-1 Hijiyama-koen\, Minami-ku:geo:132.4731389,34.3845227 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240331 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240402 DTSTAMP:20240329T010532 CREATED:20160321T205448Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240326T113416Z UID:10006543-1711864800-1711951199@gethiroshima.com SUMMARY:Illuminated Cherry Blossoms at Hiroshima Botanical Gardens DESCRIPTION:The sakura matsuri at Hiroshima City Botanical Gardens runs throughout April and on weekends during the first half of the month they also open at night when the cherry trees are illuminated\, along with other impressive light and candle displays. \n\nOpen until 20:00\nFinal admission 19:30\n\nFree shuttle bus Departs from JR Itsukaichi Station (Kita-guchi/North Exit) URL:https://gethiroshima.com/event/illuminated-cherry-blossoms-at-hiroshima-botanical-gardens-2/ LOCATION:Hiroshima City Botanical Gardens\, 495\, Kurashige 3-chome\, Saeki-ku\, Hiroshima\, Hiroshima\, 731-5156\, Japan CATEGORIES:Family,Flowers and nature,Illuminations ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:https://gethiroshima.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/hiroshima-botanical-gardens-sakura-illuminations.jpeg GEO:34.3907061;132.3474386 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Hiroshima City Botanical Gardens 495 Kurashige 3-chome Saeki-ku Hiroshima Hiroshima 731-5156 Japan;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=495\, Kurashige 3-chome\, Saeki-ku:geo:132.3474386,34.3907061 END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;VALUE=DATE:20240402 DTEND;VALUE=DATE:20240406 DTSTAMP:20240329T010532 CREATED:20240326T121721Z LAST-MODIFIED:20240326T121721Z UID:10008893-1712037600-1712296799@gethiroshima.com SUMMARY:A Piece of Ukrainian Culture for Peace DESCRIPTION:Exhibition of Motanka talisman dolls\, a tradition that has been passed down for generations in Ukraine. \nWith a deep wish for peace\, a total of 100 Motanka will be exhibited\, including those made by Ukrainian masters\, people in Japan and abroad\, and children who are now in Ukrainian shelters. \nThe aim of the exhibition is to deliver hope through Motanka\, which represent the power of love\, care\, and connection. This is followed by two Buddhist monks circling the area with swords and then shooting 7 arrows into the air which the worshippers struggle to retrieve. Lastly\, while mountain priests blow conch shells\, the pile of cypress branches is ignited. After the fire burns down and only red coals remain\, the head Buddhist monk\, followed by the mountain monks and worshippers\, walk barefoot across the coals chanting a prayer for good health and fortune. \nMembers of the public are welcome to cross the ashes barefoot. \nPhoto: Lance Cpl. Crowded\, noisy\, high in kitsch and overtly commercial\, it does\, however\, pull in tens of thousands of people from near and far\, and many of them do seem to have a pretty good time. \nIn addition to all the parades\, pop bands\, tarento celebrities\, comedians and hundreds of local hula clubs performing\, there are opportunities to watch some local kagura dance troupes. The craft beer and the local sake tents and the international food area\, also get pretty lively. But\, frankly\, there is so much going on\, and the program is almost indecipherable\, so your best bet is to dive in\, wander and see you what you come across. Or\, find yourself a shady spot and enjoy a drink and something on a stick watch the crowds go by. \nUsually\, the city streets are deserted once the stages have closed up\, but organizers are continuing to try and provide appropriate entertainment all day. In the evenings in the Peace Memorial Park area\, the Peace Flower Project event is being held nightly between 6 and 9pm with all the beautiful lights and candles on display. \nInformation below is from 2019. On this occasion\, those who lived through the event as well as those who lost loved ones play a special part in the proceedings. \nPeople of all ages from Hiroshima\, throughout Japan and the around the world\, as well as a number of Japanese and overseas dignitaries\, gather in front of the cenotaph in the middle of Peace Memorial Park. The current mayor of Hiroshima makes an appeal for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the achievement of everlasting world peace. The ceremony is usually broadcast on television stations worldwide. \nThe seating area is opened at 06:30\, but the official events begin at 08:00. At 08:15\, the time the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima\, the Bell of Peace and sirens are sounded and a 1 minute of silence is (mostly) observed. Speeches\, a peace declaration\, the release of doves and the singing of the Hiroshima Peace Song follow. Everything is finished by just before 09:00 and a day of demonstrations by both protestors on the left and the right\, as well as various anti-nuclear groups take over the streets for much of the rest of the day. \nOutline of the ceremony 8am-8:50am\n・Opening\n・Submission of the names of Atomic Bomb victims who have been identified or died in the past year\n・Address\n・Dedication of flowers\n・Minute of silence and ringing of the Peace Bell (8:15am)\n・Peace Declaration from the Mayor of Hiroshima\n・Release of doves\n・Commitment to Peace (by children’s representatives)\n・Official addresses (by Prime Minister of Japan and other visitors)\nHiroshima ・Peace Song (music by Minoru Yamamoto and words by Yoshio Shigezono)\n・Closing \nIt is usually extremely hot at even 8am and those who arrive early should be careful to avoid heatstroke and are encouraged to avail themselves of the cold water and chilled towels available below the piloti of the Peace Memorial Museum. \nThe ceremony is usually live streamed in Japanese and English – we will update with links when they are announced. \nYou are also welcome to watch the ceremony on screen at Social Book Cafe Hachidori-sha\, after which there is sure to be some open and lively discussion. You can also buy breakfast there. \nPeace Memorial Park Entry restrictions (2023 details)\nPeople without invitations will be able to access the cenotaph until 7am from the east side of the park (near the Rest House) and entry is restricted from the south of park (Peace Memorial Museum between 5am and 9am). \nIn the evening\, there is a lantern floating at which around 10\,000 lanterns are put into the water next to the A-bomb memorial. This ceremony is less formal\, with are no long speeches\, but is very powerful as the light from the dome shines down on the water lit by the many colorful lanterns floating downstream. Benjamin Pryer \nThe impressive hi-watari-shiki fire walking ritual takes place at Daishoin Temple on Miyajima twice a year in spring and autumn. \nThe autumn ceremony is held on November 15\, just as the autumn leaves are usually starting to look their best\, every year. \nReadings from the 8000 verse Perfection of Wisdom Sutra begin at 11am and extravagant Saito-goma rituals begin around 1pm in the temple forecourt with a purification offering to the alter and the chanting of sutras.
