Hiroshima JALT host Scott Thornbury from New School
in New York.

Can you learn to speak without grammar? Can you learn grammar without speaking? Is there a special grammar
of speech? What’s the best way to learn speaking? This special workshop is a part of the National JALT Four
Corners Tour. This acclaimed presenter will demonstrate ways in which speaking and grammar can be integrated.

Scott Thornbury is currently Associate Professor of English Language Studies at the New School in New York
where he teaches in an on-line MATESOL program. Scott’s previous experience includes teaching and teacher
training across Europe, the Mediterranean, and in his native New Zealand. He has written numerous textbooks
for beginning and intermediate learners as well as over a dozen books on teaching and methodology, including
two books that have been honored with the British Council’s Award for Innovation. Scott is a series editor
for the Cambridge Handbooks for Teachers (CUP) and the co-founder of the dogme ELT group. He is also the
Academic Director of the International Teacher Development Institute (iTDi), an online campus dedicated to
teacher development.
