Hands Cafe

Hands Cafe

Hands Cafe, on the second floor of Tokyu Hands department store on Hiroshima’s “densha dori”, offers some tasty comfort food, great drinks, free WiFi and even some snazzy Mac desktops for use free of charge.

Hands Cafe has become on of my favorite places to take a short break in the city center. It does tend to be a little more expensive than places offering similar fare, but the ingredients seem of high quality and the atmosphere is always agreeable.

They have some very refreshing juices – the Yuzu lemon & Honey Ginger will really brighten your day – as well as the usual Japanese cafe staples such as Melon Soda and ice cream floats. A full range of espresso based drinks are available, but I always go for the cafetiere coffee which comes on a little tray with a sandglass. It produces only one cup, but it is one cup of quite strong coffee. If tea is your thing, you can get Earl Grey, Darjeeling Tea, Camomile and Jasmine.

The food menu has some nicely put together takes on Japanese yoshoku “Western” dishes such as Soft-Boiled egg Taco Rice (温泉卵のスパイシータコライス), Avocado & Negitoro Rice Bowl with Soft-boiled egg (アボカドねぎとろ丼), Meat Sauce Pasta With Eggplant and Basil (茄子とバジルのミートソースパスタ), Napolitan with Fried Egg (目玉焼きナポリタン). There are also sandwiches which come with fried potatoes and side salad. It should be mentioned that there isn’t a great deal for strict vegetarians to get excited about on the food menu.
